On the outskirts of the city—where built space transitions into unbuilt space—subsidized construction projects are confronted with very specific challenges: here, deep-rooted structures, some of them still quite village-like, encounter areas where the city is undergoing massive expansion; such transitions require special attention and care. With the help of creative architectural solutions, vertically oriented development approaches can generate the housing density necessary for a good public-transport network without losing sight of affordability. The criteria for subsidized housing developments apply equally to multistory apartment buildings.
